Altec Lansing Model 617-8A Duplex Speakers - $100

I have a pair of vintage Altec duplex speakers. They have a 12 inch woofer with a horn tweeter built into the middle. These were built for PA use, but could be used in a home too. I have a pair, but only 1 is good, the other is siezed. These speakers are going for around $350 a pair average on Ebay, but I dont want the hassle of shipping and listing fees, Paypal, etc.
First $100 takes them both. You can download the manuals and box sizes online.

Just a precaution for any interested. "Seized" is generally an indication of a shifted magnet or pole piece, which is generally considered unrepairable.

The woof part is good. the HF is actually University Sound, kinda second rate compared to REAL Altec.
Not BAD, just not great.

The 617 is a GREAT ceiling speaker - it is able punch the HF down through room noise very well.
That said, it's NOT a hi-fi speaker, and was never intended to be.
BUT, you know - it DOES sound surprisingly good in a properly tuned box...
SO - if you can't afford a 604, then...

You're right, to be fair to the unit, it wasn't a hi-fi speaker, so it does better than expected actually.
And for the price they usually go for- I've seen numerous pairs at $160 or so- pretty darn tough to beat.
The HF is a bit rolled of for my taste.
So with that qualification- the price- a judgement would be a lot different from one where base on performance alone. Different strokes and all that.

The "going for $350 on Ebay" is a bit off, Cut that in half. I've seen them cheaper.
This is only an opinion, supported by watching Ebay.
Here's a super clean pair, at $271 about the most expensive I've seen on ebay.

Frankly at $100 plus repairs, not a super deal. Please, no offense to the OP. Not meant that way.

Once again, no worries....I just threw them up because I saw them, and wasn't interested in them myself because of the 806A/511 combo I just bought...I also am unfamiliar with them, so I figured it would at least be worth the time to let others have a look....
